America is repeating the mistakes we made in Vietnam and putting our troops at unnecessary risk. During the Vietnam War, the television images of the fighting, and the commentary of journalists often skewed the truth, contributing to the burgeoning anti-war movement. Political leaders, for the sake of politics, declared defeat and eventually legislated the end to military support of our ally, South Vietnam, and we abandoned them to their fate. Overly restrictive Rules of Engagement hampered our military's effectiveness, and the American public failed to support the American military in Vietnam.
